Welcome

Please note:

The Ibsen Society of America is in the process of merging with SASS (https://scandinavianstudy.org/). See the President’s Letter below for information.

The Ibsen Society of America (ISA) is an organization devoted to the promotion of academic and public interest in the works of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The membership of the society includes academic researchers, teachers, theater professionals, and other interested readers and viewers of Ibsen’s works in the general public.

The goal of this website is to connect visitors with the society and to inform them about its aims. The website is also the home for Ibsen News and Comment, an annual publication of the ISA that provides in-depth production reviews of recent international performances of Ibsen’s plays and commentary on recent Ibsen scholarship. Membership in the ISA provides full access to this publication.

Joan Templeton awarded The Royal Norwegian Order of Merit

Congratulations Joan Templeton!

Attendees at the 2018 International Ibsen Conference banquet were lucky to witness Joan Templeton, former ISA President and Editor of Ibsen News and Comments, receive one of Norway’s highest honors, The Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honor is conferred by King Harald and awarded to foreign nationals and Norwegian nationals permanently abroad “for outstanding service in the interests of Norway.” Templeton’s award was specifically for “dissemination of Norwegian culture.”

In the photograph, Templeton (who has just received the honor) stands with Frode Helland, former Head of the Ibsen Centre. Here is the full text of her acceptance speech:
